What Is The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists?

If you plan on becoming an x-ray tech, you’ll most likely stumble across the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) at some point in your training. The AART is a nationally-ranked organization that provides exams, certifications, and continuing education options for those in the radiology field.

Professionals with the proper certification through the ARRT are set apart from the crowd of prospective employees and often enjoy better job benefits and salaries. The AART offers certifications for the fields of radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, sonography, and MRI.

There are currently 35 states that require a certification from the AART in order to become licensed to work in the field.

The ARRT Exam

As is the case with most certifying boards at this level, students must take a course from an accredited radiology school. Upon graduation, you are eligible to sit for the test for a total of five years.

If you do not take the test within this time frame, you may need to take additional classes or show considerable work experience in order to be eligible.

The radiology technologist exam covers everything from radiologic terminology and technique to procedures and patient care. The test asks a total of 220 questions and takes four hours to complete.

In addition to a passing score, professionals must promise to adhere to a standard of ethics and regularly update their education through continuing education credits.

If you do not pass the ARRT exam the first time, you have two more tries to get a passing score. These tests must be completed within a three-year window.

Why Become an X-Ray Tech?

X-ray techs and radiology technologists are part of a dynamic and influential team of health care workers who help diagnose patients and set them on the path for better health. Rates of pay are higher than average for most two- to four-year health care degree programs, and the benefits and job hours tend to be very stable.

If this is a career field that interests you, you should visit the ARRT for more information. Their list of approved radiology tech schools can help you while you make your choice of where to get your education and how soon to get started.
