About Fortis College

Fortis College declares that they “believe in doing one thing and doing it well.” For them, that means offering training specifically in the health care field.

Montgomery, AL Health Care StudentThe school was founded in 1984 as Capps College in order to create educational opportunities for area residents interested in furthering their training after high school. It is the only school in the area that focuses solely on medical-related training. In late-2008, the school changed its name to Fortis College.

They have a mission to “change lives by providing our students with the opportunity for career advancement and a better life through high quality educational programs supported by caring and dedicated faculty and staff.”

Dental Assisting (Diploma)

A Diploma course of study, the Dental Assistant program at Fortis College combines classroom and clinical experiences in order to give graduates the skills they need to seek entry-level employment as a dental assistant.

In addition to being required to take and successfully pass the national certification examination for Dental Assistants (RDA) administered through American Medical Technologists (AMT), students learn about chair-side procedures, ordering dental supplies, cleaning/polishing equipment, sterilizing and disinfecting, and patient prep.

Medical Assisting (Diploma or Associate)

Fortis College offers a diploma for Medical Assistant in 76.5 credits. Likewise the same program is offered in an AOS format, which requires additional coursework and training. Graduates are prepared to take the national certification examination for Medical Assistance through the National Center for Competency Testing.

As Medical Assistants work in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and clinics in a number of ways, they are trained in both administrative and technical aspects of the job. Part of the educational experience at Fortis College is an externship during which students are able to work hands-on in the field to prepare for career success.

Medical Office Specialist (Associate of Occupational Studies or Diploma)

No medical office can run without the expertise of trained administrators, and the Medical Office Specialist Program at Fortis College prepares individuals to take on this role. Topics studied include secretarial, reception, transcription, and insurance billing and coding – all as it pertains to the medical office.

The diploma program takes 76.5 credits and also requires students to perform an externship. In the Associate of Occupational Studies format, students expand on concepts introduced in the Diploma level of study. This is an opportunity to work first-hand in a medical office to get the best possible educational experience.

Pharmacy Technician (Associate of Occupational Studies or Diploma)

Pharmacy Technicians are important members of the medical team, and they need specific training to do their jobs properly. Those attending Fortis College earn a diploma by accumulating 76.5 credits in areas such as Body Systems, Introduction to Anatomy and Terminology, Pharmaceutical Calculations, Professional Development, Psychology for Success, and more.

Additionally, students take part in an externship at either a hospital or a retail pharmacy. At the Associate Degree level, students expand on the training and concepts introduced in the Diploma program.

Allied Health Management (Associate of Occupational Studies)

Combined with a major of your choice, the AOS in Allied Health Management program is a great way to prepare for management and supervisor roles in the health care community.

As part of the Allied Health Management program, students can choose to focus their training in the areas of Medical Assisting, Medical Office Specialist, or Pharmacy Technician. Combining technical skills with knowledge, this program prepares students to enter the exciting world of health care

The faculty members at Fortis College in Montgomery are ready and willing to help students not only learn in the classroom, but also apply that knowledge in the real world. Instructors have real-life experience in the field and are able to translate that to bring their expertise to the students they teach.

While Montgomery has been home to several civil-rights activists throughout history, perhaps the most famous of these is Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr.. The Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where King was a pastor is located just two blocks from the state capitol, and is home to a civil rights memorial.

In addition, Dr. King’s march for justice was conducted from Selma to Montgomery, and is just one example of the struggle for equality that defines Montgomery to this day.

While the economy of Montgomery was under recession for numerous years, things have begun to turn around. With Hyundai Motor Company opening its first assembly plant in Montgomery, and revitalization efforts giving the downtown area a much needed “face-lift”, the city of Montgomery is making great strides.
