Medical Transcriptionist a Top Work At Home Job

Medical Transcriptionist Work At Home

Fox recently came out with a list of some of the most lucrative and in-demand jobs where employees have the options of working from the comfort of their own homes. Prominent on the list for health care workers and those aspiring to health care careers, is a career as a medical transcriptionist.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of medical transcriptionists is expected to grow by 14 percent between 2006 and 2016.

Unlike most health care occupations such as physician assistant, dental assistant or home health aide, that require direct contact with patients and colleagues, medical transcriptionists have the unique benefit of performing their valuable contributions to the field from their homes.

Their job mainly consists of listening to dictation from doctors via either an analog or digital recording system and simultaneously (and accurately) typing it.

I can attest from personal experience as a nurse who had to read doctor’s orders, that it is not always the easiest task to interpret the medical terminology, abbreviations, accents and other idiosyncrasies of doctors who all think they are the world’s best communicators.

This is why it is highly advisable for aspiring medical transcriptionists to get as much training, as many certifications and as much in hospital experience as possible before venturing out into the work-at-home arena. Taking these important steps will create confidence as well as professional credibility in the job search process.

Medical transcriptionists can earn from less than $10 per hour all the way to more than $20 per hour. When searching for work-at-home jobs, be sure and exercise your best judgment and common sense when reading online advertisements.

Look for company names that you can cross reference to ensure they are legitimate, verifiable contact information for a human resources contact and an employment ad with a professional appearance (without telltale “scam” spelling errors and typos).

Working at home as a medical transcriptionist can be an excellent opportunity for stay-at-home moms, retirees or others seeking a competitive health care salary combined with a comfortable working environment.
